The Kootenai River valley is wetter and snowier than the rest of Montana, with heavy winter snow loads, damp shoulder seasons and long stretches of overcast cold. Wood stoves are everywhere, and many homes around Libby, Troy and up the Yaak rely on propane or electric heat as the primary or backup source. Cold-climate heat pumps and ductless mini-splits are a natural fit here: they cut propane and electric bills, handle the damp, and give cabins and additions their own zone without ductwork.
