Do Mini-Splits Work in Montana Winters?

Yes, if you buy the right one. Standard heat pumps lose capacity as it gets colder, but cold-climate mini-splits are rated to hold most of their output at minus 5 to minus 15 degrees, and some keep running below that. For the handful of nights each winter when Missoula or Clinton drops past minus 20, we recommend a backup heat source, and we design the system that way from the start.

They also handle smoke season well. Running a mini-split with the house closed up costs far less than an oversized central system, and the washable filters are easy to clean after a smoky August.

How much does a mini-split cost installed?

Single-zone systems are the most affordable; multi-zone systems that cover a whole house cost more. We quote after a site visit and offer Synchrony financing. Utility and federal incentives may apply to high-efficiency heat pumps.

Can one outdoor unit heat my whole house?

Often, yes. Multi-zone systems run several indoor heads off one outdoor unit. Whether it makes sense depends on the layout, which is what the site visit is for.

Are there rebates for heat pumps in Montana?

Programs change year to year. Federal tax credits have applied to qualifying high-efficiency heat pumps, and some utilities offer rebates. We will tell you what your equipment qualifies for at the time of quote.

Do mini-splits need maintenance?

Less than most systems. Clean the indoor filters monthly during heavy use and have us do an annual check of the refrigerant charge and outdoor unit.
