Know the Signs

When Replacement Makes More Sense Than Repair

The system is 15 to 20 years old

Efficiency has dropped and major components are at end of life.

Repairs are stacking up

If this year's repair plus last year's adds up to half a new system, stop pouring money in.

It still uses R-22 refrigerant

Phased-out refrigerant makes every future AC repair more expensive.

Uneven heating or cooling

A system that was never sized right for the house will never fix that with repairs.

Cracked heat exchanger

A safety issue. This one is a replacement, not a repair.

You are adding AC for the first time

Many Missoula homes were built without it. We can add central air or a ductless system.

What to Expect

How We Handle an Installation

Local Expertise

Sizing a System for a Montana Home

Western Montana asks a lot from an HVAC system: minus 20 in January, mid-90s in August and a shoulder season that swings 40 degrees in a day. Equipment that is sized for a milder climate will short cycle in fall and fall behind in a cold snap. We size for the actual design temperatures in Missoula County, Ravalli County and Granite County, and we account for the older, leakier construction that is common in Missoula's established neighborhoods.

Because we turn down exclusive-brand kickbacks, we can recommend a cold-climate heat pump when it fits, a high-efficiency propane furnace when there is no gas line, or a straightforward 80 percent furnace when that is the smart buy. The right answer depends on your house, not on what earns us a commission.

Questions

HVAC Installation FAQs

How much does a new furnace or AC cost in Missoula?
It ranges widely based on system type, efficiency, size and ductwork. We give options at different price points and never quote a $15,000 system to someone who needs a $6,000 one. Financing through Synchrony is available.
What brands do you install?
Any major brand. We are not an exclusive dealer, so we install the equipment that fits your home and budget rather than whatever earns us the biggest commission.
Do heat pumps work in Montana winters?
Modern cold-climate heat pumps hold rated capacity well below zero, and we install them regularly. For the coldest nights, we often pair them with a furnace or electric backup so you are never without heat.
Do you handle permits?
Yes. We pull the required mechanical permits for installations in Missoula County and surrounding jurisdictions.
How long does an installation take?
Most furnace or AC replacements are done in a day. Full system changeouts with duct modifications may take two.
